The Academy is a program designed to serve middle school students (6th through 8th grade) within the Sumner School District who perform significantly below their expected grade level in one or more subject areas. While they may demonstrate potential, they struggle in typical classrooms, often showing difficulties in social emotional learning (SEL), which includes managing oneself, maintaining productive relationships with others, and utilizing effective work strategies. The program assists students with significant needs in these areas. They receive direct instruction in behavior management, emotional regulation, social relationships, and executive functioning in addition to core academic subjects. The goal of the program is to prepare students to be active and positively contributing members in future academic, personal, and public communities. The goal for all students is to return to a full-time role in a more traditional academic/professional setting whether that transition occurs as early as middle school, high school, or post-secondary education and career training.
